Prudhoe Castle

Prudhoe Castle
From Prudhoe, on minor road off the A695.

Tel : 01661 833459

Prudhoe, which means 'Proud Hill', certainly lives up to its name. The castle stands on a steep, wooded spur above the Tyne, perfectly placed to spot Scottish soldiers as they came over the border to attack.

Twice during the twelfth century, the massive walls of Prudhoe repelled King William of Scotland's men.

Today, you can walk along the atmospheric passageway to the ruins of the gatehouse and the keep, which over the centuries protected the Umfravilles and the Percys, the two great Northumbrian families who lived there. An exhibition and video in the Georgian manor house tell you more about the great castles of Northumbria and the days of Border warfare.
