1 mile North-East of Corbridge, on a minor road just off the B6321.

To walk from Corbridge try the Corbridge to Aydon Walk

Poor Robert de Reymes. A rich Suffolk merchant, no sooner had he built Aydon for himself as an undefended manor house, than there was an outbreak of trouble in the borders. So he immediately set about fortifying it at great extra expense. Unfortunately, this did not stop it from being pillaged and burnt by the Scots in 1315 and then seized by English rebels two years later.

Despite this, since the Middle Ages the buildings have remained remarkably intact and now provide us with a splendid impression of how a minor baron might have lived during the reign of Edward I.

As you wander freely through the courtyards, chambers, and Great Hall, spare a thought for the original owner. You're probably getting more pleasure from this house than he ever did.
